Welcome to Game Makers!

An 8-week home education project for learners who love games, creativity, and figuring out how things work

If your learner is always talking about games, tweaking rules, or imagining their own game ideas, this project gives them a way to take that further — without you needing to plan it all.

Game Makers is a ready-to-use project where your learner designs and builds their own game, step by step.

No prep. No lesson planning. Just open and begin.

About this Project

Games aren’t just something kids play — they’re something they naturally analyse, question, and improve.

This project taps into that.

Over 8 weeks, your learner moves from playing games to thinking like a game designer — exploring what makes games fun, how rules shape experiences, and how ideas turn into something real.

They’ll design their own game concept, build a prototype, and test it with others — all while developing problem-solving, creative thinking, and communication skills in a way that actually feels engaging.

Everything is designed to be:

  • flexible

  • low-pressure

  • easy to run at home

So instead of figuring out what to do next, you can step back and support your learner as they build something of their own.

  • Flexible pace

Designed as an 8-week project, but fully flexible. Go faster or slower depending on your child.

  • Flexible format

Printable PDFs you can use online or offline.

  • Flexible subjects

This project covers English, Maths, Science, Computing, Humanities, PSHE, and the Arts.

  • Flexible support

Designed for Upper Key Stage 2 learners (approx. years 5-6), with built-in suggestions for neuro-affirming adjustments.

What your learner will do

Across the 8 weeks, your learner will:

  • explore and analyse different types of games

  • generate and develop their own game idea

  • design characters, settings, and layouts

  • create rules, mechanics, and challenges

  • build a playable prototype (physical or digital-inspired)

  • test their game with others and make improvements

  • share their finished game and reflect on the process

By the end, they won’t just have “done a project” — they’ll have created something real.

What they’ll create

  • a playable game prototype (board, card, video, or hybrid)

  • a game design journal showing their ideas and process

This gives you something tangible to keep, share, or use as learning evidence — without needing to create extra documentation yourself.

Is this project a good fit for your learner?

Game Makers works especially well if your learner:

  • loves board games, video games, or making up their own rules

  • enjoys thinking about how things work (even if they don’t always want to write about it)

  • likes creating, designing, or building ideas from scratch

  • prefers open-ended projects over worksheets or set answers

  • benefits from flexible, low-pressure learning

It’s a great fit for learners who might not always engage with traditional tasks, but will happily spend time exploring something that feels meaningful to them.

This project might not be the best fit if:

  • your learner prefers step-by-step instructions with one “right” answer

  • they’re not interested in games or designing their own ideas

  • you’re looking for a structured, worksheet-based program

A note for families

Your learner doesn’t need to be a “gamer” or want to become a game developer.

This project is about exploring ideas, testing them, and creating something of their own — games just happen to be the medium.
