Creativity, Community, and Storytelling in The Valley Almanac

Hearts and Harvests invites learners to step into the role of observer, storyteller, and designer as they imagine a valley of their own and explore what helps a community flourish.

Across eight gentle, imaginative weeks, learners create The Valley Almanac — a personal collection of maps, sketches, seasonal notes, reflections, and creative writing. It’s a project filled with cosy worldbuilding, nature-inspired learning, and opportunities to explore wellbeing and sustainability in a meaningful way.

Building a World with Heart

The project begins with noticing — the sky, the seasons, the way landscapes change over time, and the small details that shape community life.
Learners explore UK climate zones, observe the weather, and discover how living things adapt to local conditions. These real-world insights then spark the design of their own imagined valley: perhaps nestled in the Lake District, perched on a windy coastline, or set in a completely fantastical world.

Each new discovery adds to The Valley Almanac, blending creativity with knowledge as learners write, illustrate, and design pages that bring their valley to life.

Seasons, Stories, and Sustainable Thinking

As the weeks unfold, learners explore how people care for one another and the environment throughout the changing seasons. They think about weather patterns, resources, wellbeing, and the ways communities stay connected.

Activities encourage creativity and practical problem-solving — from designing seed packets and community noticeboards to imagining animal shelters or seasonal celebrations.

It’s a project that brings together geography, science, art, and storytelling, helping learners see their world (and the one they create) with curiosity and compassion.

Cosy Valley Vibes (Stardew-Friendly but Not Required!)

Hearts and Harvests is lightly inspired by the wholesome, cosy energy of Stardew Valley — that gentle rhythm of planting, tending, gathering, and noticing.

Learners don’t need to know the game to enjoy the project, but those who do will instantly recognise the warm, nurturing feel of building a community where everyone belongs.

A Project That Grows With Your Learner

No two valleys will look the same. Some learners will pour their energy into detailed maps and weather charts; others will lean into storytelling, art, character creation, or environmental design.

The project is flexible and neuro-affirming, giving learners space to follow their interests, take sensory breaks when needed, and build deep understanding through hands-on, creative exploration.

By the end, they’ll have created The Valley Almanac — a beautiful record of their world, their ideas, and the way they’ve brought community and creativity together.

Why You’ll Love It

Hearts and Harvests brings a calm, imaginative pace to your learning week. It weaves together geography, science, art, and wellbeing in a way that feels natural and connected — supporting rich learning without overwhelm.
