Hearts and Harvests

Build your own valley — inspired by the cozy world of Stardew Valley.

In this 8-week project, your learner will design a place where community, creativity, and nature work together. They’ll plan the layout of their valley, explore how weather and seasons shape life, and think about how people and the environment can support each other.

It’s a blend of storytelling and sustainability — where imagination meets real-world science.

About this Project

Hearts and Harvests invites learners to imagine and design their own valley community, inspired by the world of Stardew Valley. Each week builds new layers — from mapping the land and exploring weather patterns, to designing sustainable food systems and imagining local traditions.

Throughout the project, learners create The Valley Almanac — a living record that grows as they do. It becomes the place where they collect maps, drawings, data, stories, and reflections about their valley’s seasons, ecosystems, and community life.

Learners also explore how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples understand seasonal change through Country, using these perspectives to inspire how they notice and describe change in their own imagined world.

We’ve designed this project to be curriculum-aligned, neuro-affirming, and flexible, so you can follow your learner’s interests and pace.

What Your Learner Will Do

Over the 8 weeks, your learner will:

  • Create and name their own valley, inspired by Stardew Valley’s mix of creativity, nature, and community life.

  • Explore how geography, climate, and resources shape the way their valley works.

  • Learn how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples understand and describe seasonal change through Country.

  • Investigate sustainable ways people can live, grow food, and celebrate together.

  • Record their discoveries, designs, and stories in The Valley Almanac — a growing record of how their valley changes and thrives through the seasons.

  • Use drawings, maps, writing, and diagrams to bring their ideas to life.

  • Reflect on what makes communities strong, fair, and connected.

By the end of the project, The Valley Almanac becomes both a creative showcase and a record of learning — capturing how imagination and sustainability come together in their world.
