About This Project

Systems & Signals is an 8-week homeschool project for learners in Years 3–4 (Lower Key Stage 2), designed to support calm thinking, curiosity, and flexible engagement.

In this project, your learner explores systems they encounter in everyday life, from routines and games to machines, transport, technology, and natural systems. They notice how parts connect, how systems respond to change, and how signals help systems start, stop, or adjust.

Rather than asking learners to build, fix, or improve systems, this project focuses on noticing and understanding. Learning unfolds through observation, conversation, sketching, comparison, and reflection.

There is no requirement to produce a final product. Thinking, noticing, and partial understanding are all valued outcomes.

Systems & Signals is intentionally low-demand and flexible, making it a supportive option for learners who need learning to feel gentler, while still offering real depth for those who want to explore a special interest in detail.

Who This Project Is For

Systems & Signals works especially well for learners who:

  • Need a gentle, low-pressure project

  • Are recovering from school burnout or low confidence

  • Feel anxious or overwhelmed by high expectations

  • Have a PDA profile and benefit from genuine choice and autonomy

  • Prefer thinking, talking, or sketching over producing work

  • Enjoy understanding how things work

It’s also a great fit for learners who have strong interests in things like:

  • machines or mechanisms

  • transport systems (trains, roads, traffic)

  • technology, games, or electronics

  • routines, rules, or processes

  • anything that can be broken down into parts

This project may feel less satisfying for learners who want to build something every week or prefer highly structured, step-by-step tasks with a clear end product.

What Your Learner Will Do

Over the 8 weeks, your learner may:

  • Notice systems in everyday life

  • Explore parts and connections within a system

  • Identify signals and how systems respond to them

  • Compare different systems

  • Represent their thinking through sketches, diagrams, models, or talk

  • Spend time thinking, revisiting ideas, or sitting with uncertainty

  • Reflect on how their understanding shifts over time

Some weeks may feel very active. Others may feel quiet. Both are part of the learning.
