Welcome to Sensory Architects!

Design spaces that feel as good as they look.

In this 8-week project, your learner becomes a sensory designer — discovering what makes them feel calm, focused, and inspired, then using those insights to design a space that truly fits them. As they imagine, plan, and build their own sensory-friendly environment, they’ll learn not just about design — but about themselves.

About this Project

Sensory Architects invites learners to think like designers, scientists, and self-advocates. Each week guides them through hands-on investigations, creative design challenges, and reflective activities that build awareness of how different environments affect their comfort and wellbeing.

From creating a sensory diary and testing materials, to sketching floor plans and building mini-models, learners develop practical design skills alongside emotional insight — learning how to shape spaces that support their unique sensory needs.

We’ve designed this project to be curriculum-aligned, neuro-affirming, and flexible, so you can stress less and enjoy the process together.

  • Flexible pace

Designed as an 8-week project, but fully flexible. Go faster or slower depending on your child.

  • Flexible format

Printable PDFs you can use online or offline.

  • Flexible subjects

This project covers English, Maths, Science, PSHE, Art, and Design and Technology.

  • Flexible support

Designed for Upper Key Stage 2 learners (approx. years 5-6), with built-in suggestions for neuro-affirming adjustments.

What Your Learner Will Do

Over the 8 weeks, your learner will:

  • Explore how different spaces make us feel — calm, distracted, or energised.

  • Create a Designer’s Journal and Sensory Diary to record their discoveries.

  • Investigate how design choices like light, texture, and colour shape comfort.

  • Imagine and plan their own sensory-friendly space, complete with zones for calm, creativity, or movement.

  • Experiment with layout, lighting, and materials using sketches, models, or digital tools.

  • Build a prototype or digital model of their design.

  • Refine and reflect on how their design supports comfort and inclusion.

  • Share their final creation through a presentation, gallery, or video tour.

Whether your child loves art, building, science, or interior design, Sensory Architects gives them the tools to turn self-understanding into creativity — and creativity into comfort.
