UKS2 Project Spotlight: Game Makers
Some kids love games.
Getting them to write, plan, test, and reflect on something?
That’s usually a different story.
Game Makers bridges that gap.
It’s an 8-week project where learners design their own game from scratch - building real skills along the way, without it feeling like schoolwork.
What is Game Makers?
Game Makers invites your learner to step into the role of a designer.
Instead of being told what to do, they start by exploring the games they already enjoy - noticing patterns, mechanics, and what actually makes a game fun.
From there, they build something of their own.
That might be:
a board game
a card game
a role-playing game
or even a simple digital creation
There’s no single “right” outcome, just a clear process that supports them from idea to finished creation.
What your learner will actually do
Across the project, your learner will:
Analyse games they already love
Develop their own original concept
Design rules, systems, and player experiences
Build and refine a working prototype
Test their game with real players
Improve it based on feedback
Share their final creation in a way that feels meaningful
It’s thoughtful, hands-on work but it feels like making, not “doing school.”
What’s happening underneath (without the worksheets)
While your learner is designing their game, they’re naturally working across:
English → writing instructions, explaining ideas, storytelling
Maths → logic, probability, systems, balancing gameplay
Science & Computing → testing, iteration, cause and effect
Humanities → themes, cultures, and player perspectives
PSHE → resilience, feedback, and problem-solving
Arts → visual design, character and world-building
It’s structured enough to count, but flexible enough to actually work.
Why this works (especially for reluctant learners)
Game Makers works because it removes the usual friction.
It starts with interest → games already matter to them
It builds momentum slowly → no overwhelming “big task” upfront
It allows real choice → format, theme, and complexity are flexible
It focuses on process, not perfection
For learners who resist worksheets or shut down under pressure, this kind of project often opens the door again.
What’s included
8 weeks of guided, open-ended activities
Parent Guide (clear, low-prep support)
Student Guide (creative, accessible prompts)
Resource List (optional extras, not overload)
Learning Log (simple documentation, if needed)
Everything is designed to reduce your workload, not add to it.
Who it’s for
Game Makers is a strong fit for UKS2 learners (Years 5–6) who:
enjoy games, storytelling, or building things
prefer hands-on activities over worksheets
need flexibility or a lower-pressure entry point
benefit from creative, self-directed learning
It’s also a solid option if you’re trying to re-engage a learner who’s gone off more traditional approaches.
Ready to start?
If your learner lights up around games, this is something they can own from start to finish.
