What If Kids Designed Our Towns?

Every town is a collection of decisions.

Why is the library there? Why does the river run through the middle? Why is there a playground in one neighbourhood but not another? Who decided where the roads, parks and shops should go? And who gets left out when those decisions are made?

For many parents of neurodivergent children, these questions aren't abstract. They're part of everyday life. You notice which playgrounds feel overwhelming, which paths aren't accessible, or which community spaces quietly exclude some people.

Inviting children to design a town opens up those same conversations from a different perspective.

What makes a place feel welcoming?

What helps people feel safe?

Where do people gather?

How do people get around?

How can communities make room for both people and nature?

There are no single right answers. Every community has different needs, priorities and challenges. But exploring those questions encourages children to think deeply about the places they live, and how thoughtful design can make everyday life better for everyone.

That's what makes designing a town such a powerful learning project. It isn't just about drawing maps or placing buildings. It's about understanding how communities work, recognising that every design choice has consequences, and imagining new possibilities.

Children notice different things

Ask ten children to design a town, and you'll probably end up with ten completely different communities.

One child might fill their map with parks, gardens and wildlife corridors. Another might focus on public transport, bike paths and walkable streets. Someone else might create libraries, art studios and community spaces where people can learn and create together.

Some children will notice practical problems. Others will focus on making people feel welcome. Some will design for fun. Others will design for fairness.

There isn't a right answer, and that's exactly the point.

Every choice tells a story about what matters to the person creating it.

For many neurodivergent children, those choices may also reflect the way they experience the world. They might create quieter public spaces, clearer signage, sensory-friendly community centres, accessible playgrounds, or places where people can spend time without feeling expected to buy something.

Not because someone told them to include those things, but because they're solving problems they genuinely notice.

As they explain their ideas, children begin thinking like planners, designers and problem-solvers. They learn that communities aren't fixed. They're shaped by the decisions people make, and those decisions can always be reconsidered.

Every decision changes something else

Designing a town quickly becomes much more than deciding where to put buildings.

If you build more houses, where will people park? How will they get to school or work? If you add a new shopping centre, what happens to the local businesses nearby? If you create more green spaces, how will you protect them as the town grows?

Even simple decisions have ripple effects.

A bridge might make it easier for people to cross a river, but what impact could it have on the environment? A new bike path might encourage more people to ride instead of drive. A community garden might become a place where neighbours meet, learn new skills and share food.

As children work through these kinds of questions, they begin to see that communities are made up of connected systems. Transport, housing, recreation, nature, businesses and public spaces all influence one another.

There isn't one perfect solution. Every community has to balance different needs, priorities and perspectives. Learning to weigh those trade-offs is an important part of understanding how places are planned—and why designing a town is such a rich project for curious learners.

It's about much more than geography

At first glance, designing a town looks like a geography project.

Maps, landforms, land use and communities are certainly part of it. But the learning doesn't stop there.

As children make decisions about their town, they're constantly solving problems.

How much space should be set aside for homes, businesses and parks? How will people travel from one place to another? What services does a growing community need? How can development happen without damaging the environment?

As they search for answers, children measure, estimate, research, compare ideas, test solutions, communicate their thinking and explain the reasoning behind their decisions. Before long, they're drawing on geography, maths, science, civics, sustainability and design without needing to separate them into subjects.

There isn't a template to follow or a single "correct" town to build. Every learner brings their own experiences, interests and priorities to the project, creating communities that reflect what matters to them.

That's one of the strengths of project-based learning. Rather than studying subjects in isolation, children explore a real-world challenge that draws together knowledge and skills from many different areas.

And because they're working towards something meaningful, a community they've imagined and designed themselves, the learning has a purpose that's easy to see.

Why project-based learning works so well

Questions like "What makes a great town?" don't have simple answers.

The more children investigate, the more new questions they uncover. Should the town grow bigger, or protect green spaces? How can people get around without relying on cars? Where will wildlife live? What happens when different people's needs conflict?

That's what makes projects like this so engaging.

Instead of working through a series of disconnected activities, children spend time exploring one big idea from lots of different angles. They research, create, experiment, revise their plans and discover that every answer leads to another question.

There's room to follow individual interests too.

A child who loves drawing might spend hours designing buildings and public spaces. A budding environmentalist might focus on renewable energy and conservation. Someone fascinated by transport could redesign the entire road and rail network. Another learner might become absorbed in community services, local history or accessibility.

The project stays the same, but every child's town tells a different story.
